I'm halfway through a degree and a bit clueless as to what to do afterwards. My CV is a bit on the empty side, so I know I need to get some work experience over the summer. Should I take any job, even if it is something like customer service, or should I try and find something a bit more focused towards a potential career?

Get a job, any job right now. If you want something to do with your degree, talk to your professor and see if they have any job listings that employers have sent to the school. If that doesn't work, go outside of your degree for now (remember, it isn't forever).

I'm in the middle of my degree and had the same problem, I took up doing some voluntary work, only about an hour a week, but i ahve done some good training courses for it and my Cv has vastly improved

I'm a business owner who hires quite a bit and fires occasionally. Relevancy in work experience is very important. The ability to demonstrate competency is another. Lastly the trivial work experience like working fast foods is also considered very important...if you have a successful streak of surviving a job like that means you are tough enough to do a bottom run job for meager wages and not complain loud enough to get fired. I personally value that and often check these references.

It depends on what it is you want to do with your life and what your degree is in.

For me, I want to get into museum work or historical research. I graduated with a BA last year but have found it very difficult to get into that career, due to lack of qualifications and experience. I'm now going back to university to do a Masters and have been working in 3 jobs to try and save for it. One of those jobs has been voluntary work in a museum to try and gain experience. Even if you take a normal student job during the summer, try and get yourself involved in some voluntary work in regards to the career you want - a future employer will look on this very favourably as it shows initiative and drive.

Also, my mate who went to a different university gave me some sound advice. Join in as much as you can in different clubs and societies. She could have got a 1st but have nothing on her C.V. but she got a 2:1 instead (a very respectable mark) with plenty on her C.V.

You could also try going for an internship during the summer months, even if it is abroad. This would look fantastic on your C.V. as well as showing that you are independent and focussed. They will be advertising from about now.

I hope this helps. :-)

write a letter stating your education and your desire to further your experience in the financial sector or whatever is relevant to your degree and send it to all your local banks or if it's communication skills all your local police stations (they could do with lessons from a 4 year old) , look for the most impressive companies or bodies in your relevant area and apply to them all , if you get a job making coffee for the US president it'll look good on your CV just don't mention that all you did was make coffee !

I would take any job that earns you some money AND work experience. It shows that you have a good work ethic and will look good on a future resume.

GOOD LUCK!
