Mind boggling paradox isn't it? Who knows what the universe encompasses... People say it is expanding because all the bodies that we know of are moving away from each other. Don't hurt yourself trying to get more in depth than that.

The size of something is, in fact, a reflection of our understanding of the thing.

When you were a baby the world was as big as your home. Later it filled your neighborhood, your city and your knowledge of the world via maps and travels.

It is the same with astronomers. Only their eyes are the instruments of Science and Astronomy. As the discoveries and new technologies interact, their knowledge of the Universe expands accordingly. They see father and farther into space. The most distant objects are farther and farther away. The 'edge' of the Universe - the 'size' of the Universe - grows farther and farther away. Since there is no evidence of anything beyond what they have so far discovered, it seems that the Universe is expanding.

From the point of view of us humans on Earth, it certainly seems like the Universe is getting bigger.

;-D I think they will continue to discover new and fascinating aspects of the Universe for the foreseeable future. The future seems to be moving closer to us all the time, doesn't it?

many human beings incorrectly imagine of the count number of the universe increasing right into a huge empty area. that is faulty. that is area itself that's increasing. As area expands, issues that are close jointly develop into further aside. This result isn't major on a small scale yet when we seem at distant galaxies we come across the gap in between is increasing at this variety of cost that they are hurtling remote from us. yet area isn't increasing 'into' some thing. So there is not any longer some thing outdoors the universe.

How do you know there is no place outside of the universe, you silly little 4D creature. (left-right,front-back,up-down, past-future.)

The universe may be like a bubble of a wave hitting a beach. The bacteria in the bubble don't know where all this extra space comes from as the bubble expands, because they can not get out of the bubble.
To zz9: then where is the space the balloon expands into. If you are a bacteria in the balloon, you will never know because you can't get out of the balloon.

Our universe is infinite, which means it has no boundary or edge. It goes on for ever. How ever pieces within the universe, galaxies, stars, planets, etc. are moving away from each other, or expanding. The Moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of 1 inch per year.

Think of space as the surface of a balloon with dots drawn on it that represent the galaxies of our univers. The balloons' surface is all of spacetime (inside and outside of balloon don't factor into this model).

As the balloon inflates all the galaxies move apart equally – the univers expands.

Spacetime – the universe – is not easy to understand as a whole for we who make up a part of it.
... but the balloon analogy is close enough (we think).

LATER: William B misses the point while actually making it... No room to explain.

No one knows how big the universe is. We know a lot about the universe we can see but there are more out there just as galaxies are in great number universes are as well. The human mind can't comprehend just how big big is. No don't mention god either. he is only in the mind.

universe is not expanding in a sense of growing in width and length. it's original size remain infinite so it is not the universe expanding it just the space among galaxies getting stretched.

It makes absolutely no sense, my guess is that they've got it mixed up and matter is still rushing around from since the black hole. There's too much of the universe that hasn't been explored yet, and too much that hasn't been examined under different frequencies.

I'd rephrase and say the the KNOWN universe is expanding. Everything farther that we can measure is a big question mark, isn't it.
