It's not a theory, just an analogy, for those who like to compress 15 billion years of evolution into an easy-to-swallow conceptual capsule. Our brains cannot possibly comprehend all the complexity of our universe, but there are some scientific theories, among them the theory of evolution, which are so simple and beautifully thought out that they manage to make some of that complexity, some of those mind-bogglingly large numbers, understandable. I find it a great pity that there are educated people out there trying to discredit the theory just because it makes them feel uneasy. All the evidence is on evolution's side though, as you will find out if you read around the subject or listen to any of the so-called debates between creationists and evolutionary biologists.
I'd just like to add one more thing: It's quite possible to believe in God and be a Christian AND have a thorough understanding of and belief in evolution. Creationism = fundamentalism, and we all know where that leads.

There is no scientific basis of creationism at all. In the UK creationism is not taught at all in State schools, it is not a theory as it's already been widely discredited.

The main argument for creationism (or Intelligent Design -ID) is trying to discredit the theory of eveolution but any competent scientist can usually point out the flaws in the Creationist/ID argument.

There is no scientific basis for creationism. You can find more valid science on the Discovery Channel (which by and large is bollocks) than in the Bible.

Anyone who seeks scientific answers from the Bible is deluded.

There isn't, atleast, not scientific.
Creationism is based on divine or holy thoughts intervention, and since world's best scientists still haven't found any proof of God or Goddess whatsoever, creationism is more of a hypothesis than science.

the only "evidence" offtered other than evolution is intelligent design, which in itself is just a fanciful attempt to introduce this as a science to be taught in schools as an alternative to evolution

it was rejected in a court of law due to lack of sufficient evidence
