Actually the orange is named after the spanish word for the fruit; naranja. English took the word and we used to call it a narange. But then we got lazy and moved the 'n' over to 'an' instead of 'a', hence it became an orange.

The fruit was given its name via Arabic from the word naranj from India: e.g. Hindi nārangī : later, "a norange" became "an orange". (The Spanish got their word "naranja" from their Moorish conquerors.) The colour was named after the fruit. So you're putting the cart before the horse in suggesting that the colour came before the fruit: it was the other way round.
