I assume your talking about the ps2 slimline models? i had one of those...they're prone to problems.
you said you use it for most of your dvd playing? that is most likely the problem. the dvds are alot harder to read than the regular ps1/ps2 games, and with each use they weaken your laser. if the ps2 isnt playing anything at all now, your lasers probably burnt out.
you have several options (and im assuming its no longer under warranty):
1) firstly you should try cleaning your laser. its the small thing that looks like a droplet of water. put a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton wool bud and gently clean the laser using a circular motion. then dry the laser using the same circular motion with the dry side of the cotton wool bud. that should work.
if it doesnt...
2) get a can of compressed air or a vaccum cleaner (id go with the vaccum, because if the inside of the ps2 is dusty the compressed air could worsen the problem)and clean the inside of the console.
and then...if that didnt work,
3) take apart the ps2 and clean each individual part.
or you could always just buy another ps2. whatever.
good luck

I also have this model of the ps2 and I have the exact same problem, another way that it might work is putting a semi heavy object right on top of where the door secures with a clip. For me, this works since my ps2 thinks that my door is not closed .
The clip is located right above the door opening button.

Ours does the same thing, and most days I want to kick it.
What I do when I'm trying to force it to play videos in my bedroom for the kids is I unplug everything and then clean it with a q-tip gently dunked in rubbing alcohol. I kind of blot the q-tip after I dip it so that it's not soaked, and then I rub it on the little glass eye thats in there.
More times than not, it'll play the movie if I clean it. But, I find I still have to do it between every movie.
Also, kind of blow it off and let it dry good before you plug it all back in, or you could ruin the electrical components in there.

You don't say if any of your other DVDs work. If so, then try cleaning the offending disc, if not then try a lens cleaner.
You might also want to check the connection to the PSP and the TV - it may be loose. (Games and DVDs on the PSP use different wires within the multi-out cable).

This happened to me on my old ps2,it's either the laser going **** up or you have used it too much with dvds.
You can get e-books from ebay that will help you.

properly it style of sounds like ur ps2 is kinda getting previous and kinda getting dusty, u can sparkling up that difficulty yet its gonna take some possibility. u or somebody who has some information on electronics can basically open up the ps2, look for the factor the place lasers come out and get a cotton bud and gently sparkling the laser with the cotton buds. the prospect is, if u scratch that laser u heavily isn't waiting to play any video games returned, except u substitute that laser with a sparkling that's easily truly complicated. if u have a question on a thank you to open up the ps2, google it ull hit upon a lot of advice on a thank you to open it
