It's a moronic question. I would ask the interviewer if THEY work without pay. And also tell the interviewer that if I was independantly wealthy, that perhaps I would donate my time to the not-for-profit organization of my choosing.

Honestly, I don't think it's right unless it's some kind of humanitarian job or something. Of course you're getting a job for the pay, isn't that the point of getting a job! Well, maybe the interviewer wants to see if you have passion for what you're doing. It all depends, I guess, on what the job is. I sure ain't gonna flip burgers at McDonald's without any pay, if you know what I mean!

it sounds like a very silly question, unless the interviewer was offering you some kind of unpaid work experience, but then why would he think you'd be interested in that?
even if the job was fantastic, no-one could afford to work for free.
Did you ask what the interviewer meant? I think I'd ask, just to clarify what he was getting at.

It wasn't illegal but it was unethical and strange. Personally I would have refused to answer that question. I think the person who asked that question was just trying to gauge your enthusiasm for the job, but this also could be a foreshadowing of things to come. Perhaps the company is in financial hardship? I would think twice about working for this company. Sounds like they have something to hide.

I don't think it's illegal to ask that. Sounds like one of those trick questions interviewers ask when they are really trying to find out something else. Anybody who answers that they would work for a particular company for free is obviously lying.

I would ask the interviewer if they would be willing to work without pay.

i guess they are trying to gauge how dedicated to the job you are but it is a silly question because realistically you need to be paid. I would answer : "no because i believe my services are so valuable that it is only fair i get a monetary reward for them."
I doubt it is illegal to ask the question though.

It's a trick question, hon....they probably asked you that to see how you value your self worth as a person as well as an employee. It was a legal question and it was professional for them to ask it, yes. They were probably also looking for how you would react to that question. Remember to always respond and never react.
