iyiogrency has the right idea, but the equation is wrong. The problem reads "x feet farther than Abe"--because Abe sits 3 feet away, this means that Carol must sit x+3 feet away from the fulcrum.

The weight of each person must be multiplied by his distance from the fulcrum, and the two sides must be equal for it to balance. The equation should read as follows:

60*3+40(x+3)=90*6
180+40x+120=540
40x=240
x=6

Carol sits 6 feet farther back from the fulcrum than Abe. Check:

Abe is 60 pounds and sits 3 feet away = 180 foot-pounds
Carol is 40 pounds and sits 6+3 feet away = 360 foot-pounds
Total on this side = 540 foot-pounds

Billy weighs 90 pounds and sits 6 feet away = 540 foot-pounds
