It does restart after system restore as I want it to but the next time I switch on the computer it reverts back to no sound with large icons and text.

For any problems, or accidently deleted files i do not use system restore but use norton go back,it is realy easy to use and i find it invaluable.

Go to control panel and check all of your sound settings. Then check your settings for the wallpaper by right clicking anywhere on your screen and selecting properties. It sounds as if your resolution is to low. Once you get it working and it stays ok, clean out your old system restore points and start a new one with it working right. System resore can and does store some traces of viruses and such at times.

System Restore has nothing to do with the display settings of your PC.
You need to either:

Look at the magnification or zoom of your PC settings
Re adjust your resolution

Sounds like it's starting in safe mode. Switch on and press F2 select normal mode from list. Hope this helps.

try control panel click accessibility options were you can change icon size and letter size then control panel click on sound and audio devises you can then adjust volume
