they think you've increased the value of property more likely and since there is a new value placed your property, the Gov't doesn't give a hoot and wants some monies too! Been like that for too many years...We need to bring back the poll taxing....

Just think of the things that weren't taxed over 100 yrs ago, nowaday that is just not so...

This sounds like property tax in the US so Im going to answer that. I dont if its exactly the same as in the US, but here, the value of your home is determined by several factors, including the neighborhood, how the houses in the area are selling, access to services, etc.

These values are determined by real estate agents in the US. They decide what a house in a particular place is worth, according to all those factors above, set the price, then the city or whoever uses THAT number to determine what your tax on that property will be the next year. If housing prices go through an artifical price surge, your taxes increase along with that surge, whether you had plans to sell it or not.

You SHOULDN'T be punished in ANY way for improving your property. Here, your taxes go up if YOUR NEIGHBOR improves his place, even if you don't! If you are not using any more county services than you were 5 years ago, why should your BILL for these services increase? You SHOULD have to pay based on the amount of services you DO use more or less than others in your neighborhood. You have a huge family and use a lot of water, you should pay for it. You are single and DONT, you shouldnt have to pay for your neighbors use.

Ok you buy a piece of property for 50,000 . The taxes are 2% or what they like to call 20 mills .Thats 1000 dollars a year .over the next forty years they will take 40,000 if nothing changes . SO you buy a house and pay 150,000 including interest over 30 years and after 40 you have paid another 40,000 so thats 190,000 dollars for that 50,000 dollar property . This is why they say never purchase a property unless it is 25% of your income . To meet payments . Or the three times your annual pay .Which is high . Between the governments payroll taxes and the states property taxes and the banks interest rate you are never working to have anything . It is all just part and parcel of the military industrial complex that is eating away at everything you do to get ahead .Taxes are suppose to pay for schools and state workers who provide needed services . I say that for a fraction of that cost a private security company could defend your property and investigate crime . You should pay to educate your own children . I have none and it is not to my benefit in any way to educate your kids .

Glyntinmy - why indeed should anyone be punished for improving their property - I have improved my property over the years so because of this you and I and everyone that has a pride in their home will in the future pay increased taxes. How unfair.
What we should do is stand together and refuse to pay such a tax - people power they call it. Let me know when you have organised a demonstration and I am sure you will get support from all quarters - Good luck ........

For the same reason that a family of the same size as yours should be punished for living in a more expensive house - even though they produce the same amount of rubbish and use the same street lights. It's an unfair system - bring back the poll tax!!! Everyone pays their own way rather than looking at the value of the house.

The trouble is if your wealthy increasing the Council Tax won't make any difference, but if your an average wage earner it makes a hell of a lot of difference. As an average wage earner you are entitled to nothing and have to pay for everything!

My partner and I were talking about this yesterday.

We think it is wrong, especially when you think what you pay for Councll tax and don't get the proper services that are supposed to be included or policing.

It is just another way of the government to extract more money out of the working population and sometimes it makes you feel - why should you bother to improve your lifestyle.

Brown & Blair's way of making everyone richer. Did anyone really think that Brown wouldn't rob the hard working people of this country blind whilst openly wasting public money on the scum that don't work and the ones that shouldn't be here!!!

This is just the start. Wait until that thieving jock becomes PM!!
