It's like a mechanical clicking and happens only when I'm in drive and accelerating. The only thing I can equate it to would be the sound of the freshness seal on a snapple (or other glass beverage) cap after it has been opened (pip-pop) - only it's louder and more mechanical sounding. It happens at all speed levels 15-60mph and results in cut outs in my acceleration. I have a 1991 buick regal v3.8. Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Sounds like the CV joint is going bad. I don't know for sure, but that is the first thing I'd look at.

My car had a shifter bushing go out which made this horrible noise when driving. The worst part is that it was almost impossible to pinpoint where the noise was coming from. Sounded like it was coming from behind the dash. I own a very different car from you, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to look into.
