I ask this question once before. I will ask it again in another way.

I now know how to assemble my own computers, and I also know how to set up a small network, about 10 computers.

I also know how to use Ghost to copy Windows to all the computers in the network at one go.

I also know how to program and use the router, through not completely and mostly only Cisco routers.

Some of you suggested I started a carrier in IT Hardware, some suggested I be an administrator for network, others suggested I be a computer consultant or ursue a career in I.T.

The question I want to ask is, is what I know good enough for me to start a career in IT - perhaps in administration or hardware, or do I need to know more before I seek my career?

How much do I really need to know before I seek a career in IT?

If you're able to put together your own machines and setup a small network your have enough knowledge to get started on the field, I definitely recommend to start in the hardware section, this will give you a strong foundation in to what is going to be your carrier.

First of all you have 2 mayor options in IT, that would be Software (database management, software creation, software maintenance, security, forensics and so on) or Hardware (hardware support, network admin, security, forensics, server management, wiring, and so on) it is up to you to choose a field that you want to on and pursue that.

If network management is what you like, I do recommend stating in hardware for a few years and move your way up, and in the meanwhile with the money you start making try to invest in yourself, by this I mean, get some certifications under you, MCSE, CCNA, Network+, Security+ and so on, or try to get a BS in Computer Science, this will give you more credibility against an employer, also do not get frustrated when your hitting the interview road and always be confident in the skills that you already posses, remember technology is always changing but if you take the time to develop yourself you will be more confident in your knowledge and this is when the doors start opening left and right.

Best of luck and always remember that IT is about sharing information and making things easier for everyone, so if you get stuck with something research, ask and don't try to reinvent the wheel, the majority of the times someone already went trough what your going trough so just ask and research. Hope this helps.

You can never know too much. Search for IT jobs on monster.com and see what requirements most companies are looking for and then focus on learning those skills. If you see any you qualify for then apply for the jobs. If you get an interview you can learn more from the company which will help you prepare for other jobs if that one isn't the one you want.

You may want to look at getting certified by places like Novell or Cisco. That will help as well and make you more competitive.
