What make is the GPS? Most manufacturers have a downloadable owners manual which will help you get started!

Good Luck!

Hi,
I'm always happy to help a yachtsman, if you are unsuccessful in locating a PDF or downloadable instruction book for your GPS online then feel free to email me at work on admin@sailingunlimited.net. We have a reasonable amount of experience with different units among us and I'm pretty sure we could get you up and running. Just let me know the type and model of your GPS.
Best regards,
Geoff

RTFM?
each manufacturer has their own way of doing things
it also depends on what you want to do
try the manufacturers website.. most have downloadabel instructions

you can use the GPS in an active or passive mode
by active I mean you can use it to plan where you want to go, by putting in waypoints than plan your route. Some of the swankier modern units have maprs/charts in allowing you to analyse the route and make sure you aren't in danger of hittign rocks or shoals or other hazards
by passive I mean just use it to tell you your current position (usually it will also tell you your speed, heading etc...)

mind you it does beg the question how come you have GPS in your boat but dont have the instructions... its not hooky gear is it?

You usually have to load your locational information on to a memory card via a computer, so whatever lake you are planning on going you'll have the local landmarks and other various information displayed, instead of just your coordinates/speed/direction. You could search for the user manual on the manufacturer's website as well.

Hey Donkey, Get the net! Read the directions! Also Buy charts and a copy of the rules. Do not become a Nav. Hazzard.
