installing a pcmcia cable driver?

Question

has anyone ever had to install a pcmcia cable driver on to a laptop(the laptop in question is a compaq armada 4210 running windows 98se)
i have a driver for the pcmcia external cd-rw but when i try to install the drivers it returns a message................................"pcmcia cable"driver not found...set up aborted....connect the "pcmcia cable" device first and follow the screen instructions to install the "pcmcia cable" driver..........inportant: choose the "pcmcia cable" driver and not the windows standard driver
i know this message looks straightforward but when i connect the pcmcia cd-rw device it just beeps and then a pcmcia icon appears in the taskbar,when i click this it just shows a window with the properties of the pcmcia card(s)
there is no option for installing or updating any pcmcia cable driver,so basically im totally bamboozled
is there any way of installing these pcmcia drivers,maybe someone who,s had a comapq armada

Try putting the pcmcia card in and let the computer detect it, and then insert the cd, and when the hardware wizard appears, let it search on the cd or on the pc whereever the driver is...

it should install...

It's not the laptop-ness that's the problem, it's the win98se-ness that's the problem.

Win98se needs drivers for each device... if the CD-RW device came with a driver CD then it should have the necessary driver available on it. If it didn't have a CD, you have to find it (probably from the manufacturer's website).

I can see a catch-22 there... if you have your driver on a CD how do you install it on a win98se machine with no CD player? You've got to get it onto the laptop somehow... mail it / download it from the internet / copy the driver install files by diskette / copy across a network link.

Install the driver following the installation instructions and win98se will know what to do with the CD drive when it appears on the usb bus.
