No, a CD is not designed to "self destruct".

A CD may fail but it is usually because of scratches or other physical damage. Reading a CD does not wear it. The data is read by a light beam.

A pressed CD will last longer then a CD that is burned.

ROM stands for Read Only Memory... they can't change the contents. So, no.

Dirty CD, scratched CD, defective CD reader are the most likely causes.
