freedom. It was the south that was fighting for a government of the people by the people for the people. Unfortunately the north won. Incidentally there were more blacks fighting for the south than for the north. The "emancipation proclamation" was passed late in the war (to keep France from joining the south) and while it pretended to free the slaves in the south (where Lincoln had no authority) it did NOT free slaves in the north (Delaware for example) where he did have authority.
