I would like to have plants in my new home but I am unsure what to buy. I need a plant that requires little to no sun and very hearty. Can someone give me names of plants to look for?

Spider Plants. You can get the green ones or some beautiful variegated ones. NASA says they are the very best plant for cleaning the air, so there is a hidden added benefit to them. They don't need direct sunlight and actually prefer to be a little on the cold side.

Philodendrons also have green and variegated variteies and don't need direct light. I have some trained to trail out all along a curtain rod. Another batch of them I put into a big pot in which I had stuck a couple of branched sticks and they are happily climbing. (philo - lover, dendron-tree) In their natural state they wrap around and climb trees.

Both only need to be watered weekly, don't need constant repotting and are not bug-prone.

Snake plants, aloe vera and jade are also very easy to keep.

All plants need some light to grow - otherwise they will turn yellow and die. Some just need less light than others.

If you are going to buy a plant, you want to look for a plant that does well in shade.

Good choices: spider plants (as others mentioned), ferns, suculents (cactus family) do not need much water. Philodendren are common houseplants and usually do well, but they are toxic to children and pets. Ivy, although easy to grow, is also toxic.

If children and pets are a concern you should do a quick shearch on +"house plants" +toxic and get a quick idea of what to avoid.

Spider Plant. Growing up my parents had one on top of a tall hutch in the kitchen. Being up near the ceiling, it got plenty of heat, moisture from the cooking in the kitchen, and it got watered every week. That thing Loved it up there. What light it got was from the ambient light in the room from the windows, it never got direct sunlight. There are several more that would work. Check with your local Master Gardeners, or gardening club for more ideas.
