Well for starters, before and especially after WW 2, women were generally homemakers while their husbands took care of the family. As good blue collar jobs began to expand during the 40's. 50's. and 60's, women had an even more important role at home raising the kids, cooking meals, and basically running the home's "day-to-day" operation if you will.
With the advent of the civil rights movement and the women's lib movement from the 60's and 70's, women began demanding more of a role as a wage earner thus they began demanding that they be treated equal to men. While the civil rights movement was viewed by many as being a protest for basic civil rights for african americans that is guaranteed to all americans under our
constitution, women seen this as the perfect opportunity for them to start their own movement and they piggybacked the womens lib movement on the back of the civil rights movement.
The civil rights movement had more to do with women finally gaining a place within the America fabric as wage earners and equals to their male counterparts.
Finally during the womens lib explosion and the right to choose decision of the 70's, women began to join the workforce at an alarming rate. They also returned to school to earn college degrees which put them on a path to earn money not quite as equal to their male counterparts but it did give them a leg up from previous generations of women in America.
Now more so than ever before, two income households are practically the norm with skyrocketing housing costs, healthcare, kids, automobiles etc etc. Women are now firmly planted in the workforce in blue collar and white collar jobs more so than ever before in our history.
