I would say most people outside Canada don't support Canadian hockey because they are simply not hockey fans. In America there are many other popular sports such as football, baseball and basketball. As an American I realize and respect that Canada is the birthplace of hockey and most of the NHL's best players over the past century have been from Canada. However, hockey is now a "Global" sport. The NHL is becomming a more international game with European and Soviet players now free to play in the NHL, so it is not exclusively the USA's fault that hockey's true Canadian heritage is being forgotten by NHL fans.

You would have to ask the Canadians. They were the ones who made it what it is today so it's kind of hard to understand the lack of followers! Maybe they do think that the NHL has become diluted with all the US teams but all the teams bring the almighty dollar to the league. And the majority of the players are NOT from the US. I don't know statistics but Canada still has to have at least half the players in the NHL in spite of all the foreigners. I think that if people don't start following their local teams in Canada soon there will BE no local teams in Canada and that would be a stinkin' shame!

I don't know which planet you come from, but Canadians DO love hockey much more than the Americans. I was actually reading an article in the newspaper this morning saying that the NHL was less and less interested in Hockey in the United States. I've never seen an empty arena in a Canadian town compared to US arenas, where sometimes it's so empty you can actually hear the players talking to each other on the ice.

I didn't know they didn't? I watch games on DirectTV and the crowds always seem very supportive. I know there is an issue throughout the NHL because of the cost of tickets. But people still find ways to go to games and support their team.
In American Football there is a constant buzz, but they play one game a week, not 3 like in the NHL. So even the most ravid fans can't go crazy for each and every NHL game.

Here's this issue. Hockey is not supported in the U.S., whether it is an American or Canadian team. It has it's markets, however it is not understood or accepted by the general observer or casual fan if you will.
Nationally in the U.S., hockey is on bad networks, one not even carried by all cable outlets. The games that are on NBC are inconsistent, meaning they do not get televised on a regular basis.
In my local midwest newspaper, the scores show up *most* of the time. However, there are never any stories associated with games, even the Stanley Cup finals.
If it were not for DirecTV with Center-Ice package , and Yahoo Sports, most of us fans would be in the dark.

People support it alright. It's the NHL and Gary Bettman that don't support The Canadian teams. Ratings in Canada for a Toronto game, are equal to those For football in the US.

In many small Canadian towns we can play casual hockey all winter, and many arenas now have summer ice. As more arenas that can keep ice during warmer temperatures pop up in the States and more people can try it, more people will see how emotional and exhilarating the game can be. Only then can it be supported by more of our American friends.

Living in Michigan and being able to see HNIC every Saturday, I don't know where someone would get the idea that Canadians don't support their teams. The Canadian buildings are almost always filled to capacity, and are some of the loudest buildings in the league.

I don't think people dont support canadian hockey, some of the best hockey players are canadian, but Canadians a lot of thte time do not support american hockey because they feel that americans don't know anything about hockey when in fact they do.
