Freud terms it the super ego. Suggest you see a qualified shrink. You may have to pay to unravel the situation!

I have an over-active guilty conscience and have learned over the years to separate fact from fantasy. Much of what I thought was guilt was an anxiety disorder.

As to genuine guilt, although it's sometimes hard, I quit doing the real things that made me feel guilty. Lying, gossiping, etc. They felt fun at the time, but I knew I would pay later. So, had to quit...

King James Version of the Bible
Book of Ecclesiastes
3:1
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
================================================================
Guilt comes from the conscience (which is a part of the super ego)
We need a conscience if we are going to be mentally healthy in a society.
Is it your conscience or another's conscience that is punishing you?
If it is another's conscience then you have introjected (swallowed it with out mentally chewing it up) it and it isn't yours until you have used your own intelligence and morality to make it your own.
If it isn't yours then you might get alone and holler "KISS OFF!" to those thoughts or "GET THE #### OFF MY BACK!" when you have those feelings.
If you have violated your own morals or ethics then make amends to yourself or another you have harmed. Then you can heal and grow emotionally. No telling how long it will take.

Having a conscience is tough, isn't it.. But it's what keeps our morals together, and you feeling guilty means you have a sense of responsibility. If there's no way to fix the problem and it's already been done:
In time, the guiltiness will pass.
In the meantime, find a way to express your frustration with yourself by drawing, writing, painting, kickboxing (?) etc.
It will also keep you busy and help you get on with your life.

Resolve the issue of why you are feeling guilty and the rest will fall into place.

why? what did you do? if you're guilty for doing something you know is wrong., then admit it., do something that'll replace taht guilt away.. like do a good deed., and most of all.,, PRAY.,
if you're guilty and you know you didnt do something wrong.. then you must be a very caring person to be thinking of what others feel., well, dont be., its your personality to be caring and sensitive., you just have to be confident enough to accept that

Getting that judgmental person out of your head. It is hard to brush off so easily. Learn to recognize what voice is yours and which voice belongs to the person that was so free with their opinions. Also, stop saying or thinking about those damn words "should" and "shouldn't" @8-)

I just did this with and about my daughter. I wrote her a letter, rewrote it and then reread it. And then wrote a letter to myself. Finally I realized that I can not control anyone other that myself. In other words, I told myself to get over it.
My suggestion is to start writing.
Good luck.

what are you feeling guilty about, is it something you know you shouldn't of done? I would just tell myself that its done and over with and there is nothing you can do now.
