Great question. I was inclined to agree with you until really looking at it with an objective point of view. Like many others, I generally don't have a great respect for cheerleaders. But my perspective has changed after doing a bit of research.
A sport is defined as an activity or experience that gives enjoyment or recreation; pastime, diversion; such an activity, esp when competitive, requiring more or less vigorous bodily exertion, and carried on, sometimes as a profession, according to some set of rules. In the broadest sense of the word, cheer leading evolved into a sport when they began holding competitions.
IMHO, cheer leading is more closely related to a performance art, but so too is figure skating. There are no baskets, goals, bases, etc. to keep score, but still it is considered a sport because skaters compete against one another for the judges' approval. Cheer leading is a team effort which requires practice and the coordination of team members to work together as a whole to obtain an objective. It also requires athletic ability to perform gymnastics which on its own is a competitive sport. Therefore, cheer leading can and should be considered a sport as well as an art. (as much as I hate to admit it) :(

I've never been a cheerleader and have never thought of it as a sport. But it is athletic, jumping up and down waving your arms(jumping jacks); doing the splits (gymnastics); Those human towers (weight lifting);
Not that I am particularly fond of cheerleading (negative memories from the cliquishness in high school). I can appreciate the athleticism involved.

no because most cheer leading involves introducing a football or basketball side etc which are teams involved in sport ---- the cheer leading is an inspiration for their teams competition that they are about to embark on in the field of play .
cheer leading is nonetheless a very demanding contribution of skills --- which you could be forgiven for thinking it could rate as a sport --- but alas i fear that won't happen --- the rivalry is between the competitive sides that want nothing but the best cheerleaders to will them on their way to victory . good luck .
