Owch. Not a good situation.. So you're telling me that this is on a whole different computer.. and you're files are in that computer?
Hmm.. i just had this crazy idea where you connect the two computers [like a LAN connection] and try to get your files. But thats most likely not gonna work.
I would tell you to Reformat your computer but since you said that you're Programming Assignments are in there.. this is a Tuffy...
Heck. I'm only 15, but i WAS in this situation before. What i did was leave my computer alone.. Turned off without any power sources and turned it on the next hour. amazingly, it worked. Fluke.

But since you said you solved this problem by Reformatting it.. I'm clueless. Sorry~ >.<

Depending on what kind of processor you have, you will need to install a different type of OS. If you have a 64 bit processor, it is different in the way it stores data in the cache than the 32 bit processor. intel extreme, amd64, turion64 and the like are 64 bit CPU s and intel pentium D, duo , solo , centrino, sempron, all those are 32 bit.

Go to http://fedora.redhat.com/

download fedora core 6 [depending on your processor type,i386 for 32 bit, x86 64 for 64 bit] from one of the mirror sites (not the main site) [it is terribly slow] and burn to iso discs like with other linux distros, install with the installation guide on the site. I wont do it for you, there is a detailed guide on the fedora page. it will tell you how to format your hard drive with fedora so you can possibly boot windows again. good luck,

oh, Active Iso burner is a really good freeware iso burner.
