Infant is 7 months and appears to be suffering from an ear infection. He swats his ear repeatedly and is a little irritable. I'm searching for an herbal remedy and found Otalgin. Just wondering if anyone has used it with success b4 I purchase.

Thanks

Time is your best bet. In fact MDs are being advised not to prescribe anti-biotics to mothers/caregivers in most cases of ear infection unless the condition has not cleared itself up within 5 days. If it takes longer than that then I would go and get it checked out. If not then the baby's immunity has just been raised naturally without any sort of outside intervention.

Otalgin is an over-the-counter herbal ear drop that lowers pain. It is made of glycerol, alcohol and geranium. Both glycerol and alcohol are dehydrating agents which help lower pressure in the ear.

Otalgin may help soothe your baby and the ear infection may pass on its own but it IS NOT a treatment. If your baby requires anti-biotics, Otalgin will not work as an anti-biotic.

PLEASE take your baby to the doctor for a medical opinion.

I hope your baby feels better soon!

Based on what do you know your baby's ear is infected? When I was a baby I had a problem with excess ear wax. It was a physical thing, that needed to be softened (olive oil works) and cleaned out. If it is an infection, a weak solution of peroxide might help. (check for proper dilution) My general recommendation is to get a cool mist humidifier, and add a pint of hydrogen peroxide to the gallon of water in the humidifier. Run that at night while you sleep, and it moistens and disinfects the air passages, and helps overcome most respiratory problems.
