Swimming is the best exercise as the strokes are centered towards all the areas of the body. And one thing you will note is that in 20min one will get tired doing physical exercise but you will never get tired with swimming thus more fat is burnt.

How? Not, why is the question.
Swimming is both an aerobic and anaerobic form of exercise. Thats the reason swimming is such a great way to stay/keep fit.
Aerobically, you are in near constant motion working several of your major muscle groups at once. Additionally, because you are holding your breath much of the time, your body if forced to adjust and modify its VO2 levels. This enables you to maximize the use of oxygen. As you continually work the major muscle groups, your heart also learns to maximize its efforts, thus giving you a better aerobic capcaity.
Anaerobically, you are going through relative, resistance training with minimal impact on your joints. The weight of the swimmer combined with the resistance of the water create relative work. With minimal impact on your joints, you are able to continue the activity longer and with less negative side effects.
The ONE thing to make sure of when swimming for exercise, is that you maintain proper form. As you will be stretching/using muscles, tendons and joints, it is imperative that you use them properly and do NOT stress any one too much. Swimming, though safe and effective can also be damaging to the body when done wrong. Consult with a coach, doctor or experienced swimmer when creating and following a swimming based workout program.

first off swimming is an exercise. Have you ever tried to swim 10 laps? It is exhausting. OR tread water for 10 minutes?
But there are benefits to swimming over other exercise. As water is like a spotter. It holds your body giving it the benefit of not straining and injuring other parts of your body. We all ready know that water takes down swelling due to injury. And that warm water helps with arthritis.

swimming is resistance training,
water is heavy, and requires lots of muscle
power and strength to keep you going.
water has a very great density, and you need to use your whole
body to swim.
