hi there,

i am furious,i am due to move out of my flat on the 1st of february and over the weekend there was a knock on the door, it was the new tenant who is by the way homeless. my landlord had given him a key and he wanted to know when i was moving out, he said that my landlord had told him to come and go as he pleases. is there anything that i can do, i have been on to the landlords associatioon but he is out of their juristiction, CAB advised me to call them and i really dont want him to get away with handing out keys to my flat to complete strangers, bad form!

if anyone knows if i can take legal action against him, or where to report him to that would be great thank you

i called l/l and he refused to get the key back then the tenant called back again and i demanded the key off him, he callled the l/l and he gave the key back to me so i have all copies of the key (well i think i do) police said that once i had the key there was nothing i can do, local councils say that he is out of their juristiction, there has to be something i can do because this guy had been "viewing" our flat on his own and had been coming in and out. i have all the doors locked and the dead bolt on and i am literaaly going in and out of my back door, there is only one key for that.

Legally the landlord was in the wrong to give access to your appartment before your lease expired and without your concent, this alone is ground for legal action. Add in the potential risks of having given a key to someone else, literally opening your life to them is a breach of confidence and a criminal offense.

Check with the local renter board and authorities for the specifics, then persue this matter allt he way to the courts.

Geesh, Call your LANDLORD! You are taking the word of a stranger? You said he knocked....and he had a key? The first thing, I would call the landlord, the second would be call the police...the third, putting on a dead bolt lock. Good Luck!

I would get a lawyer and take legal action. I doubt he's out of the jurisdiction of a lawyer. I would then either change every lock
(and taking them with you when you leave) or just forget about the 30 days and leave. Until you make that call or contact a
lawyer he or she will continue to get away with all they can.

I'd say this is grounds for legal action and I would go all the way with it if I had to. Check for Renters Rights in your area.
