You could look in facebook (www.facebook.com) but it's a newish thing and might be a long shot at best...
Have you tried asking the uni if they have contact details, and if so whether they could pass your information to your friend?

what about skype, or msn. Its hard to find people you have lost contact with. So i hope you find who you are looking for.
