I'm looking for more action anime. I'm a girl so I'm not really into hot catgirls and I REALLY don't like shojo/romance stuff or little kid's stuff.
I like lots of explosions and fight scenes, good art and characters with lots of backstory. What other series should I try?

Black Lagoon + Black Lagoon Second Barrage -> definitely my best pick for Action for 2006
Scrapped Princess -> Fantasy setting, like it a lot
Karas -> Exceptional use of CG effects, very good
Full Metal Panic -> not really that good
Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu -> really funny stuff, fantastic
Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid -> very much better than the 1st season. animation is of a very high standard
Cowboy Bebop -> space, bounty hunters (everybody's heard of Bebop anyhow)
Samurai Champloo -> from the creator of Cowboy Bebop, story feels the same way, very nice action and soundtrack
Ghost in the Shell: SAC
Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd gig
Mai-Hime -> good, -> has a sequel (entirely different but reuses character designs from Mai-Hime) Mai-Otome which isn't as good
Fate / Stay Night -> battle for the holy grail, mages + servants
Eureka Seven -> lots of story, quite unique concept
Trinity Blood -> feels like a Hellsing clone, not really that good imo
Trigun -> if you haven't seen it
Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou Chou -> one of the best ninja anime, way more realistic than Naruto
Twelve Kingdoms -> based on a novel, fantasy setting, fantastic story
Get Backers -> more shounen-ish, but lots of fights if you like it

More Shounen-ish stuff
Bleach & Naruto combo -> what else to say ... most popular shounen titles besides One Piece
Black Cat

There's nothing wrong with the Shoujo / Drama genres:
Fruits Basket
Ouran High School Host Club
Kareshi Kanojou no Jijou
Honey and Clover, Honey and Clover 2
more recently,:
Nodame Cantabile

Last Exile has the same kind of steampunk element of FMA, is gorgeous to look at and has a good story;
Fate Stay Night has some great art and fight scenes;
Gankutsuou: Count of Monte Cristo is a sci-fi/fantasy take on the classic story. The art style is unique, plenty of fights and backstory;
Gun Sword has plenty of fight scenes (kind of along lines of Cowboy Bebop);
S-cry-ed also has plenty of fights, and some interesting characters;
Full Metal Panic/FMP:Fumoffu/FMP:The Second Raid - definitely worth watching if you like explosions and fights (though Fumoffu is more on the goofy end);
Trinity Blood is kinda like Trigun meets Hellsing;
Chrono Crusade
