If the people were born blind, they have no REM and no visual imagery; the dreams consist of impressions from the other senses -- touch, hearing, smell, and taste. If the people were sighted and then became blind, they have REM (if the eye muscles have not yet atrophied), and their dreams contain visual imagery -- but these visual dreams might cease to occur eventually

I would say so - if they cant, it's a bit like saying that blind people have no imagination. Think about it this way, if you read a book that contains a fictional character/item that you have never seen or before, you still manage to conjure up a picture in your minds eye of what they/it would look like. I imagine it's the same with blind people.

I once heard a story about a person who was born blind & imagined the world to be a really amazing place & then (somehow) got their sight back & was so horrified with what they saw, they wanted to blind again. (Not sure how true this is though, so dont hold me to it!)

There's also a prog on Ch5 (UK) this week 'Extraordinary People' about a blind kid who can see by using sonar! How amazing is that?

I look at it this way, I say yes... Mainly because when you listen to music and close your eyes, you see whatever you want to see. When you read a book, you can imagine through detail of words what it is... why would a blind person be any different. I'm sure that they've read a book, or been told a story... you don't have to see something first to dream it. In my opinion, I think that they see things more vividly and intensely than we do, maybe the colors might be off a bit, but it makes it more unique.

Generally blind people who have had some sight since birth will 'see' in dreams.
People who were born blind, normally do not have any memory of visible things so, do not 'see' in dreams.
Saying that however, there have been a few cases of 'born- blind', people actually reporting that they have vivid dreams.

This is just a guess, but I think they can. because our imagination is completely different to what we see. if they've been blind from birth they may just have their own imagination of what people and other things would look like. what an interesting question that can only be answered by somebody who can ask a blind person.

I once heard that some blind people see flashes of color and light, and shadows, but not images... they don't know what images are to have the.... unless they went blind later in life.

My uncle who is blind and confined to a wheelchair is a strange fellow. He has a very odd belief system, taking elements from the Celtic and Native American religions. Why is this important? Well, when he's talking about his beliefs, he describes, in vivid detail, going on spirit journeys with his supernatural animal guide. He also used to like playing Dungeons and Dragons with me and you need an imagination for that. I don't think being blind hinders your mind's eye.

I know 2 guys who are blind.

One was born blind and he says that he only experiences dreams in smell, touch, sound etc. - he has no concept of what sight is like.

The other became blind over time and yes, in his dreams he sees things.

Hope this helps.

Very few people are 100% blind. Many of those went blind rather than being born blind so many do have memory of what they have seen.

Most researchers believe that people who are blind from birth or who become blind in infancy do not see in their dreams. They do not retain visual imagery because it was never acquired in the first place.

If they do not know what anything looks like, how can they imagine what anything looks like!?!?!
