Ah, sadly, you have hit on one of those unfortunate holdovers from very early in the evolution of humans, and it must be countered with a change in perception to be removed.
See, in order to successfully breed, all animals must find mates that are similar to themselves. Antelopes must breed with antelopes. Cats must mate with cats. Fish with fish. The alternative is to risk failing in that most important of activities: perpetuation of one's genetic pattern.
The problem arises because humans have a very narrow view of what is "human." Unlike dogs, who seem to recognize any four-legged cursorial mammal as a potential mate (which may explain the incredible range of breeds), humans are very specific in their choice of mates, and growing moreso as our civilization becomes more sophisticated.
Now, it is not only physicial characteristics, but cultural and even subcultural characteristics that determine the "fitness" of a mate.
Perhaps there is an evolutionary end to such specialization ... or perhaps it is just the perversity of human society, but the result is that humans have ever more narrow definitions of what consitutes "one of us."
Since the drive to reproduce is the primary function of any organism, and since the dominance of one's progeny is the ultimate goal, and since (for whatever reasons) those who are perceived as "different" are not "one of us" and potential mates, but rather competitors for the same pool of resources, the result is racism. QED.
There is a rather simple solution, one which was arrived at rather early in our history, but which many have forgotten ... that is to "assimilate." Mimicry (initially) of the culture into which one inserts oneself is an important survival tool. Whether the mimicry becomes true assimilation (like the Irish-Americans or the Gotho-Romans) or merely persistant and effective camouflage, is of no matter.
But it is vital. To fail to assimilate and "become" the same as the host culture, is to become an invader, and to meet with hostility that we term "racism", but may just be a manifestation of primal reproductive instinct.
Them's yer choices, bub: change your ways or change human nature. It's up to you to decide which is a better strategy.

I think it is because most people are afraid of anything that is beyond their immediate comfort zone (themselves). If people would stop and learn and try to understand the world around them, then I think that racism could virtually disappear. Our children will have minds that are much more open then our generation. And I am thankful for that.

Racism is completely environmental. It comes from family, friends, and the surrounding culture of people. Bring small children together, and they don't care who or what anyone looks like. They just play and co-exist in harmony. Introduce to that child a personal bias' of family, friends, or perhaps some negative experiences, some lessons of history, and suddenly that child becomes "aware" of the differences and potentially acts accordingly. Unfortunately.

Why is there too much racism? because people think that it makes them better than other people.. which builds their self esteem.. and after time thats the only way they know how to build it... which is i must say an easy way to get self esteem... which is why its still around today.
