We see it as early as kindergarten -- one person always gets picked as the odd one out who is the constant butt of jokes and ridicule. Even as adults, we do it -- we pick those who are different then we are and insult not only their choices, but their worth as people? What is it about hurting others that causes us happiness?

Unfortunately Delylah, humans beings are for the most part mean spirited.I do agree that it starts generally in late childhood and early teen years. Girls are more inclined to be mean spirited than boys for the simple reason that we can be very petty, superficial and jealous. Boys don't spend time thinking about the things that girls do. Yes, even as adults we continue in that frame of mind. Men begin to be more competitive in business and women continue with spiteful behavior. I think that being said the majority of people once they grow up begin to try to treat others the way that they want to be treated but some never seem to out grow their childhood problems.

Low self esteem. They only pick on those who are weaker or already unpopular. The next time you witness a bullying act, attack the bully. He/she will fall apart quickly if you appear strong and resolute. The bully does not expect counter-attacks and will be caught by surprise. That's why guerrilla warfare has been found to be very effective against the powerful.
