click on the start menu on the lower left side of the screen.
now click on the "run" icon and type the following word without quotes "msconfig"
next click on the last tab icon stated as startup
next unclick all the items u want to unload from startupfrom the menu their
alternatively u ca delete all the items from the startmenu>programs>startup.
But as all items are not listed in the second method so prefer the first method.
Thanks for the 2 points

you can goto the start button and click 'run' then type in "msconfig" and the system configuration should pop up. After that you sorta hve to know what to uncheck. Most of the time you can delete majority of the items on it.
edit: oops the other person said it already.
Dont worry if you uncheck the wrong one because you can always go back and undo what you unchecked.

there are several ways to control startup programs and services.
1> you can go to Run command (Windows+R) and run "msconfig". Go to startup tab and deselect programs you want to disable at startup.
you can also control services from here.
2> You can remove direct links to program from "C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_folder>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
3> But for services, it is better if you type "services.msc" in Run window (Windows+R) and select Automatic/Manual/Disable services.
4> Run "regedit". Search for "Run" and "RunOnce". And delete keys.
** Stay away from registry if your're a novice. Stick to option 1 and 2. Better yet, use programs like "System Mechanic" if you can.

You can also go to www.download.com and get a free app called Startup control panel which clearly tells you what is being activated on startup and gives you the facility to disable or remove said item

I recommend the use of the Windows startup manager http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).
