Not from the U.S., are you? I'll assume you know nothing and explain it all. Back in the 19th century, there was this big divide in the U.S. The northern half of the country was primarily an industrial economy, and the south relied on agricultural plantations where the fields were worked by slaves imported from Africa. The opinion in the north was that making people do your work for you at gunpoint was wrong, and they released all their slaves. In the south it was a crucial part of their economy and they had to keep them.
Eventually, the south got so nervous that the north might try to make them give up their slaves and actually pay their laborers that they decided to break away from the U.S. The southern states banded together in an alliance called the confederacy, and launched an attack on the northern half of the U.S. The war was long and incredibly bloody, but eventually the northern half won and the slaves were freed.
The Caucasian population in the south was more than a little angry about losing their free labor. They had been taught that africans were inferior and fit only to work in the fields, and this idea took a long time to die. Everywhere, there were attempts to separate these "foul primitives" from whites in the south; separate drinking fountains, different (lower paying) jobs that were considered acceptable for the black populace, gunpoint intimidation to keep them from voting...a bit like the shias and the sunnis in Iraq before the current war, only more so.
Since then all the laws have changed and attitudes have improved, but if you look you will notice that most of the low-paying jobs like janitor or buss boy are staffed by people with darker skins...its a socioeconomic thing. Its in the north too, but to a lesser extent.
There are also cultural differences. Religion is less important in the northern half of the country, and we pronounce our English without the drawl that is common in the south. The south is also generally more laid back, and is slightly less obsessed with being on time to appointments than the north.
Note that there is a big difference between Georgia and southern California. The region called "the south" is really more like the south-east, and goes from Texas east towards Virginia on a map.
Oh, and not all southerners are racists but most racists are southerners, just so this is clear.
Hope this helps.

It's because before the American Civil War, the southerners wanted to keep slavery legal (because they had a more agrarian society) while the northerners wanted to outlaw slavery (partly because they had a more industrial society, and could use cheap labor called "wage slaves"). Then, during the Civil Rights movement of the 60's, a couple of southern states were most extreme in protesting integration.
There are as many *individual* racists in the north as the south, but there was nowhere near as much *socially sanctioned* racism.
Also, keep in mind that racism is a manifestation of fear. My dad grew up in Minnesota and never even *saw* a black man until he started travelling as a teenager. My mom had all of *two* African American students in her school. The lesser numbers would thus make the minority race seem less threatening than in the south, where people (wrongly) feared uprisings and revolts.

Some in the south are still fighting the civil war. They still think blacks should be owned and not heard. Been going on since 1865 so it's certainly nothing new. Just uneducated Southerners. I'm from the south and I hear it every day. No big thing to me I suppose because it doesn't involve me but that's not being very nice because it does make other people feel bad. There is nothing I can personally do about mass ignorance.

I don't think any Caucasian people anywhere like foreigners too much,no more than your country is happy to have others arrive and takeover or intermarry there.Orientals are notoroiusly homogenous, though not necessarily cruel and racist. The Southern Whites were more intent on holding Negroes as slaves, while the Northern Whites, had an industry and culture that didn't depend on Negroes, but they were just as White as the Southerners. Many places that receive others are also run by others.I would like some things for my own race, but does that make me racist?Everyone else has things for their race, should we all be mixed,so we can all be kind, and good to one another?

Why is every other damn question about racism. Quit feeling sorry for your damn selves, get over it, and move on. Find a charity or something to devote some time to. Jesus Christ, I mean if it is not for save the children by some celeb who only cares because they were sentenced to community service, or some whining people who are worried about being discriminated against because they are black or female or skinny or fat or jewish or gay or whatever. It's really enough. Is the BIGGEST thing in your life that you need to worry about? Seriously. IF it is, you really need to get a life, that has real problems.

I live in the north but I spend a lot of time down south and I can tell you that there is racism everywhere. (AND YES THIS INCLUDES OTHER RACES BESIDES WHITE AMERICANS TOO) Don't blame it all on the south and don't blame it all on the whites though we do contribute to it.
