I knocked it onto the floor and now when I plug it in the computer makes the "ba-bumb" noise meaning it recognises that there's new hardware but I cant get it too see the files or anything. I don't feel like spending lots of money on a professional techie so what low risk stuff can I try myself to get it working again?

You shouldn't have knocked onto the floor ... they don't like that ... you've probably damaged the heads or even the platters ... give up ... write all the data that was on it off and put it down to experience ... go buy a new external drive ... and ...pssssst
DON'T KNOCK THIS ONE OVER!!!!!

Low risk stuff = go out and buy a replacement external drive unit. Throw the old one away, they're not designed to survive impact with the floor from desk height.

Middling risk stuff = dismantle it, find what drive it has inside and buy one with the same physical size, no higher electrical demands and same interface. The risks are: 1) You drop the new one while fitting it. 2) The electronics in the case are also broken so the new drive doesn't work.

Either way, you've most likely lost the data unless you pay a data-recovery service to get it back for you.

This could be a disk failure .. could be the head, or platter .. or even the IDE Connector(if you are using a ext case + hdd)/pwr connector/PCB inside the casing..
1. if u are using an external case + HDD, then remove the HDD and connect it directly to an IDE cable in ur system ...
2. If it is a branded external hdd(ie.. moulded & factory seals) .. then take it back to ur dealer.. he could atleast help u find someone who can extract the some data IF the platters are OK.

even if the first step works, pls get a new hdd.... and try not dropping it again :)

get a new drive of the same model. open up the drives and swap damaged parts carefully.
