i have a Western Digital SATA hard disk how can i format it? and can i do that from windows xp or should it be a stand alone to be formated?

yes you should be able to format it with winXP, it need not be standalone.
If you already have winXP installed on another HD, then connect the SATA HD, go in BIOS, see if the HD is detected there, after that save and exit.
Boot in windows,then go to
control panel (classic view)> Administrative tools > COmputer management > Disk management
In the right panel you should see all the hard disks connected to your computer, right click on the disk icon to get the menu to re partition, create new partition, format etc

You can format a harddisk directly from Windows Explorer. Just be sure it is connected to your PC, properly partitioned, and is not your Master Drive.

Yes.. U can format using WinXP only..
