my girl is trying to talk me into acoustic since thats what she plays but I really like the idea of electric and what are some good brands for both types? I'd like to stay around the $200 i could barely find a damn thing in that range at the guitar center and I really didn't know what I was looking at.

I play and teach on the side, so here goes....

My advice is to learn what you like to listen to- if you like hard stuff, get an electric and thrash on- if you like the blues, folk, country, classical, get an acoustic. You can always buy another when you're interested- I've got four of both...

As far as brands, there are plenty of good 'starter packs' out there-Yamaha, Fender, Alvarez, Ibanez all come to mind- for 'entry-level' instruments, the label really doesn't matter- what does is the instrument's playability-whether it's set up properly in terms of the action-string height over the fretboard, intonation-the strings are adjusted so that the guitar stays in tune from the first fret all the way up to the 22nd. Find someone who plays(that you trust), and have them come to the store with you- have him look at and play a few prospects, and see what works. One of the major reasons that beginners lose interest in playing is poorly set up guitars. If you haven't started taking lessons, at least sit down with the guitar in your lap and see if you're comfortable with it- You want to make this your first guitar, not your last...

Good Luck,
Seamus

For a beginner acoustic I can recommend a Fender DG-7. It is an inexpensive solid guitar great for learning on.
