In theory, (and I stress only in theory), it's the method used by a republic (i.e, the United states). A republic nation just describes a state of government in which the people choose a leader to represent them in govt. In order to choose a leader there has to be a system available to properly elect a person or persons who is going to best serve the needs of the public. So thats why we hold elections. It basically is the foundation of democracy

The period of campaign during an election is one of the few times when the constituents or electorate, (whether in district, county, unit committee, state or national) have the opportunity to actually assess and choose a candidate to represent them. more importantly it affords the electorate an opportunity to take part in governance in the only way available to them i.e. thru exercisaing their franchise to vote.
the campaign period also galvanises govt. and civil soceity into action in terms of bringing to the fore the developmental and topical issues of the day (for that particular locality) and that need to be discussed. It is an opportunity also for the electorate to qustion and know the calibre of individual who wishes to lead or represent them.
Usually the agenda for the future term is also shaped by the kind of responses given by politians on the platform and the campaigning period affords everyone an opportunity to clearly identify the standards and benchmarks and targets to which they can be held accountable if they are elected

Importance of campaigning in the election lies in its enabling the candidate get elected by presenting party manifesto before the public and counteracting the points posed by the opposing candidates if any. It is the foremost thing in a democracy. In advanced countries like US open debates are shared in common platform while electioneering.

This is a game played in those governments which call themselves democracies, and in some republics, wherein any number of the most affluent residents gather together with other affluent team members and select one of their member to out swear and demonize and otherwise defame selected members of like oposing teams. This game superceede a similar game based on singles combat dueling which was a most popular pasttime in ancient, slightly more barbaric cultures.
