I think it's because most of us only respect people we don't know fully well. At least that's the main force behind the celebrity culture. But once we understand that the next person is not too different from us we scorn them and look for the next utopian best thing.
Generally this only applies to people who don't think deeply enough about anything.

A very true saying - probably because the more you get to know somebody the more confident you feel about being yourself around them and in effect this can sometimes lead to contempt.

Because life is about movement not things that hang around. The interesting things don't hang around long enough to be familiar with. You have to change yourself to live, etc, etc, etc
In relationships somebody said, 'familiarity breeds attempt,' but I can't remember who...

The more you know about something, the more likely you are likely to ignore the consequences of messing that something around.
It's rathe like saying you know a stretch of road like the back of your hand, then losing control on the next bend.
