They need something to back up their irrational hatred and prejudices.

If it doesn't meet with their perception of what is good and correct then why would they want to?
It was ever thus. The Roman Catholic Church's Bible includes the Apocrypha, which are omitted from the Protestant ones. Neither accept the Dead Sea Scrolls although the Coptic (Egyptian) Church considers them relevant...
No wonder then that individuals will do the same to make an interpretation justify their contempt for things with which they do not agree.

Because if it doesn't serve to excuse their hate or their self righteous attitudes then they have to ignore it.Most often, I have found, people who use certain quotes constantly have absolutely no idea what they actually mean and in what reference they were originally meant for and what the original language actually said.
My favorite is when they quote 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 which has their favorite sentence " Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.".But it is interesting to note that the word homosexual was not a word until the 1800's and the word sodomite does not have the same meaning in the original texts. But they would not know that. And what they don't know about their own supposive beliefs far out way what they do know.

The bible was written by man to keep the masses in fear of going to "hell", and therefore keep them in line. So it stands to reason that "man" uses his own book to back up his opinions.
We've all noticed how certain other things have been conveniently ignored - like a menstruating female being unclean, and therefore banished to the outskirts of her community for the duration of her period.
I keep waiting for the third testament to be written. The one where god again "changes his mind" on stuff that was said in the second testament.

Because if we tried to take every verse from the Bible and incorporate it into our everyday lives, we'd be so confused we wouldn't know which way to turn! Do we put witches and homosexuals to death or do we follow the Ten Commandments and not kill? This is just one of the contradictions in the Bible that made me skeptical of belief as a teenager. Now, as a Christian adult, I've realized that the words themselves are not important -- its the message that God sends to us through them.
Fitting ourselves into all the small details of what this book says we should be isn't what Christianity is all about. Its about having a personal relationship with Jesus that leads us in the right direction, and knowing that we are saved by God's grace through our faith in him ... even if we mess up. You should be careful about throwing stones, my friend. We're all guilty of sinning and one person's sin does not outweigh another ... that lie you might have told or that moment of jealously lies equally with engaging in homosexual intercourse in the eyes of God. If more of us remembered that all sin is an abomination to God, not just some, maybe we wouldn't be so judgemental.
