In a lot of ways man acts like a herd animal. Often there is no apparent reason for a shift in direction. A gust of wind might get things started. In this case, I think the current trend toward green has two big helpers.

First, it is becoming possible for everyday people to make green choices. In Oklahoma you can spend a couple extra dollars and help fund wind energy. Green is getting cheap, especially when oil was so high. Second, its becoming good business. If a big company can show off its green, its public image improves.

Of course, the fact that many people are beginning to believe we are running out of time helps too.
