Greenland is the largest island in the world.

To the people that said Australia... Australia is a continent, and if you are going to consider any land mass surrounded on all sides by water to be an island - then Australia would still be incorrect. The largest continuous land mass in the world which is surrounded by water would be the whole of Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are all connected by land, and are surrounded by water on all sides (as is every other land mass on the planet).

Greenland is officially the biggest Island in the World. Australia is bigger but because it's classified as the World's smallest Continent (as the main land mass of Oceania/Australasia) it can't be classed as the World's largest Island as well.

At 840,000 square miles (2,175,590 km2), Greenland is the world's largest island.

Although Australia also meets the definition of an island (a piece of land surrounded by water), it is large enough to be considered its own continent.

Australia and Antarctica both have a claim to be in this island list however, for geological, political and cultural reasons they are described as continental land masses and so are not included in the list.

However if they were included Antarctica would be the largest island with an area of 5,400,000 sq. miles (14,000,000 sq. km)and Australia would be the second largest island with an area of 2,941,517 sq. miles (7,618,493 sq. km).

Australia is the largest island in the world and yet the smallest continent. If you don't think of a continent as a classified island than Greenland is your answer.
