Letters A and B are reserved for Floppy Drives. C to Z are reserved for Hard Disks, CD, DVD, TAPE and Other Magnetic Drives and Disks.
In most computers you have only one FDD and One HDD and CD.
So A would be occupied by Floppy and C and D would be occupied by Hard Disk and CD ROM Respectively.
If you have more then one partition on the Hard Disk the Hard Disk may accupy few more drive letters.
Now a days the floppy is fading out so you are not seeing B Drive. But when i first learnt computers there was no hard disk and every computer used to have a: and b:
If you need any further clarification please get back to me.

The A drive and the B drive are reserved for floppy drives. If you have only one floppy drive, you will have an A drive but not a B drive. The C drive is your first hard drive. Drives after the C drive are secondary hard drives, virtual hard drives, CD or DVD drives, and removable (like USB) drives.
PS I don't consider myself a computer wizard, there is always somebody else who knows more, and I don't have A+ certification yet.

A and B drives are reserved for floppy drives, that were person-friendly various years in the past. A floppy force would properly be set to A or B contained in the Bios setup once you first boot your computer up.

A and B drives are reserved for floppy drives. so if you have two floppy drives it will show as a and b drives. In some bios you can change the letter even if you have one drive. i.e even if you have one drive you can set it to show as b:

You are making a false assumption that there is never a 'B' drive. There can easily be a 'B' drive - it is used mostly for a second floppy drive.

B drive was used for the old 5.25 inch 700k floppy disks - they used to have A and B drives, as they often had no hard drive.

DRIVE A AND DRIVE B WERE THE THINGS OF THE PAST. THEY WERE USED FOR THREE AND HALF INCH, FIVE AND THREE QUARTERS INCH RESPECTIVELY. THEY DID NOT HAVE VIRTUAL ADDRESSING SYSTEMS IN THOSE DAYS SO THE ADDRESSING SYSTEM ON THE MAINBOARD ETC CANNOT BE CHANGED NOW AND THUS ADDRESSES CANNOT BE OCCUPIED BY ANYTHING ELSE.
THE REASON FOR IT BEING NOT THEIR IS THAT THEIR ARE FAR BETTER PERIPHERALS IN MUCH LESS COST PRICE.
