Because most programmers have completely abandoned the idea of elegant programming. Why is that? because with todays computer speeds and large memory/disk spaces available, they haven't felt the need to be spartan with lines of code. In fact, some of them feel it is more impressive to say that they worked on a program with 3 million loc, as opposed to 250 loc.

I don't know why they need a lot of memory. I'm sure, 85% will be used to build eye candies, and user interface, and only 15% for real program. But who care? I have no plan to switch to vista, because I still happy with performance of my old PC. Now I can do almost everything with my PC, except running the lattest 3D games (have no time for that)
