Banning the private car would save far more children's lives, but we don't consider that. This seems to demonstrate that our personal convenience is more important than the lives of several hundred children per year.

It's the politicians on all levels (local, state and federal) that won't make tough enough laws and judges (including the supreme court)that won't impose tough enough sentences/death penalties and then carry them out. It's the fault of the aclu and other "rights" organizations that think criminals have more rights than victims (no-matter the age of the victim) and it's the fault of the voters for electing people time and again who can't get their priorities in order and pander to these groups. Sure we care enough, but the voting booth is going to be the only way to change it. Look at the way things are going with these career politicians being in there. If it doesn't have a $$$ in front, it isn't important. Time for new, tougher blood in our law-making/enforcing bodies!!!

We all care, personally I wood like to shoot them but this is not the answer, human rights etc,as there values of life seem different to our own, perhaps sentence should be for life rather than short term, but who pays for it in the end,by the press and tv they seem to get too many privileges, being allowed to look at porn etc, as ordinary beings we are not in the full picture of what goes on,it is a very difficult subject that needs sorting by proper polices that are fair to the victims and families on both side of the coin

You're choosing a very good week to ask this question when the British justice system let's a paedophile back on the streets because of prison over crowding and then jails a journalist for tapping a royal phone in the same week...the world is going to hell in a handcart

It would be interesting to know how other countries deal with this problem. All I really know is that in USA they are let out after serving their time and where ever they move to the community is informed so they can be watched, I cant see that working here in UK and I cant understand it working in America?
Yes there should be special hostels and they should never be let out unsupervised both for the protection of kids and also for their own protection, or better still incarcerated for life!
I also wonder if a study has been carried out to see how many we have in the UK and how much it would cost to lock them up for ever, and would the cost matter?
Around 50 million people in the UK.
Take £1 off each per week, no one is really going to miss a quid a week are they? Thats 50 million x 52 weeks = more than enough to lock all the bas*ards up for ever. You raise a good point do we care enough to let the govt' take this quid per week off us?
Another big problem we have in UK is we have far too many 'clever people' saying "Tom Dick and Harry are now completly cured, let them out, its cruel to keep them away from society" I wonder if they ever invite any around to their own homes to baby sit for them???

I work very hard at being a reasonable person, sometimes even against my experience and instincts.
This really is the one question where I just cannot think 'reasonably'.
Children are our most precious resource, they are our greatest hope, and they should get our greatest care.
They don't.
We should persuade our politicians, any which way, that we want an effective survey, we don't care how much it costs, we want to know the best allround way to protect our children.
Then, no matter what the results are, no matter who or what they offend, put it into effect.
No spin, no excuses, no higher priorities, no ego, no career, MAKE IT WORK.
Speaking for myself, YES, I care but I don't know if it's enough.

Peadophiles are not even being locked up now, they are walking the street as the prisons are too crowded! - Proper polices definately need to be put in place. I worry all the time about my step children and in fact any child. It is not a safe country anymore, but is obviously not the top priority of the government - Unless something happened to one of their children of course then it would be top priority!

First let me say I agree that anyone who hurts a child is despicable. That being said where do you draw the line. Why is it just pedophiles why not rapists, child batterers, murderers, etc.
I work in "adult daycare" (Corrections) and see these persons everyday. The problem is that the same lawmakers that gratefully passed the Adam Walsh law refuse to come up with the money to pay for the incarceration of the people they are refusing to release after their sentence expires.

I think the answer lies with the children. No matter how great a system we try to enforce, a few pedophiles will always be able to sneak through. The best thing to do is to educate our children to recognize the danger signs and avoid them.

To be completely honest, I don't think Paedophilia can be cured and I don't think paedophiles can be rehabilitated.
I think, once caught, paedophiles should be locked up somewhere for the rest of lives, with no chance of getting out. It sounds really harsh, but it's the one crime I just can't forgive.
