I just took the GRE about a week ago. It's about 3 hours long right now and computerized. In the fall, they are going to a longer test. One thing that is changing is the way it graded. Currently, the test adapts to the taker--if you're doing well, you get harder questions; if you're doing poorly, you get easier questions. In the fall, the test will not be adaptive. Personally, I didn't like the adaptive aspect, but it's really what you want. Also, instead of one verbal and one math section (45 minutes and 30 minutes respectively), one random experimental section of verbal or math, and two essays, the new one will have two verbal sections and two math sections, each 40 minutes each, and 2 essays.

Also, the new test will have functions that the old one didn't such as: questions that aren't strictly multiple choice (such as highlighting or fill-in-the-blank), and also there will be a built-in calculator. While the calculator would be nice, I had an experimental section with the fill-in-the-blank and such, and I did not like it at all.

If I had the time (and money), I would take it once before and once after. If I had to choose, I would go ahead and take it now.

The current model supposedly favors people with higher writing abilities and women. Noone knows how the new iteration will skew, so It's pretty much a coinflip. If you're strong at writing, I'd take it now (I got top 5th percentile on the writing portion, and I didn't think I did a very good job), but if you're weak at writing and a male, you might want to see what the next version has to offer.

Any new version will have its glitches which may need ironing out. Plus you may not want to be part of the test group for it. If you are ready now, take it now since you have a better idea what you are dealing with.

It depends.

Personally, I'd take it now, because two and a half hours is more appealing to me than over four hours.

The link below identifies and describes the changes. That should help you decide for yourself.

Best wishes to you!
