Most public fountains collect the coins yearly/monthly and give them to a charity. Just because the coins are in a public place does not mean they are "public" property.

If the coins are thrown there on purpose by people for a specific reason, then it's NOT legal to take them out as they belong to the Cultural Authorities. If you simply drop a coin accidentally into a fountain then you have the right topick it up as it belongs to you;)

Yes if you tell them when the say something that your son threw a rare penny, an indianhead cent 1877 worth a 1000 dollars in it.then walk off in disgust, cussing under your breath.I was broke once.if your broke and need some dinner then its perfectly OK.with me anyway.

no, only at the trevi fountain in rome....even then, it's legal to take money...but not touch the water....so...when nobody's looking, go for it....
