There's no real significance to the day other than it is the first regular season game. The games that count out of the 160+ for the season.

For the a's they do some amount of pregame fesitivies. introduction of the team and coaching staff. We have a whole brand new staff really this year. This year it is on April 2 vs. Seattle. The website says festivies begin at 3:30pm. So there is obviously stuff happening...as the A's usually play at 6:30 or 7pm most days.

As somebody else mentioned any special awards for players are given out. Chavez will receive his six gold glove that night. Which will be bittersweet with Ron Washington not there to give it to him. :( There is usally some giveaway for the fans. Last year fans got magnetic season schedules.

It is no different than any other team that does opening day. 49ers and Raiders do the same thing. They play preseason games for warm up and practice and then get down to business.

For most people, opening night is just the first game of the season for any Major League Baseball team. For hardcore fans, the owners try to make it more fun.

For the Oakland A's, it consists of a game with a close rival (like the New York Yankees) and has special introductions for the players. Awards that the players have won (like the Golden Glove) are presented before the game, and fireworks are usually set off afterwords. There is usually a prize given away to fan(s) as well as a promotional effort.

"opening night"

is usually the night before the regular season opens.
Only 2 teams play. This year opening night is April 1st
(so whoever wins is the fool). It's a way to promote the beginning of the baseball season.
The next day, usually the rest of the teams play to start their season.

Also, "opening night" is usually on a Sunday night and is on either Fox or ESPN to boost ratings and get people excited for the season.

Opening night is just a normal regualr game, and counts in the standings..but it is a way for MLB to promote it self more better.
