It feel like I have to wait for ages, for cars that are not there, before being allowed to legally cross the road. What triggers the red, amber, green system? Is this a simple timer? I thought plates under the road triggered the traffic lights? (or is this a myth?)
Why can't this cycle be shortened by the press of the pedestrian button? Why do I have to wait in the sun for cars that are not there?

I always like to use a song for this Stop says the red light go says the green wait says the yellow light coming in between
Ha ha sorry bout that was being a smartarse I believe you are somewhar right with the timer system it seems to explain alot more than the other ideas and yes the time you have to wait is rather ridiculous It cant be due to plates under the road or sensers when there are no cars there

Beg pardon sir.. Trust me, it's not just in Brisbane that the traffic light "trolls " live ! Here, in the U.S.of A. a healthy part of our "interior " is regulated by these antiquated systems ! You talk about wasting gas and environmental pollution, you'd be hard pressed to find many things that cause more energy waste than "stone age traffic lights !"You think you get frustrated sitting there waiting for someone / thing to "trip " the light, try riding a motorcycle through this type of system ! The blinkin' thing might as well be made of cardboard !!

Lights are almost always controlled by 'inductive loops.' These are very weak electromagnets buried under the road's surface and covered with a thin strip of black rubber or tar. They are big loops of wires with a low voltage running through them. You can read all about them at the link below. That company makes a traffic light changer - I have several - they are great!
