I left in a rush from a hotel, tried to use the automated TV check out which was advertised but wasnt there. Left about five hours before my check out time, had no do not disturb signs on the door, and the hotel charged me another day on the same day I left. Can they do that? I didnt read it anywhere in any of the paperwork they gave me.

I only rented the room one night, stayed Thursday, left early morning Friday. Didn't break anything, didn't leave anything personal.

you have to go to the front desk if the TV option does not work. other than that, the hotel will think you are still residing in the room. and you also have to give back the key. so the hotel CAN charge you extra if you do not notify them

As long as you left the hotel without checking out at the desk (since you didn't have a TV checkout) then you are liable for one day. Actually, if you never checked out the hotel can nail you for more than a day but they usually don't. It is mandatory (see your contract and the sign on the front door of your room) that you check out at a specified time. There is a clerk at the front desk all night long.

Did you checkout earlier than you booked? Did you leave any of your personal stuff in the room? Did you break anything in the room? Did you smoke in the room? Why haven't you called the hotel to see why they charged you? How long ago was this? You may be SOL...

I 'm not sure what exactly happened with you,but here is the hotels check out rules, check out should be at 12 o'clock,if you stayed for more till 6 pm they will charge you with late check out fees, after 6 pm they will charge you with over night fees, check out means you go to the front office desk hand them you key and pay your bill other wise you are considered to be occupying the room till you do all that.
Wish that helps

well i work at a hotel and we either charge them for another night or an over stay fee...but i know that if someone calls me and tells me about their situation i will take their fees off of their card...so call and hopefully they will pity u...we have it stated in tiny print on a paper they sign in at check-in...we keep that paper and they never c it again...so maybe u did sign something about it but u dont have it anymore....that sucks sorry babe

i did housekeeping for awhile and the only reason that checking out was needed was because it helped the house keepers by knowing what room was empty.
