There is this weird blue stuff that periodically drips. It lands right behind the toilet. I don't know exactly what is causing this or why. I have also noticed that it sometimes comes out onto the rim of the toilet. Does anyone know what is going on and how do I fix this?

Several answers, but none is complete.

Several suggested that it is from one of those blue cleaner packages that you drop into the tank. Theoretically, they help keep the bowl clean. Actually, I think they just make it harder to see that it isn't clean :-)

First, you need to take the lid off the tank to see if that is the case. If you see one of those packages, or the remains of one, you know why it is blue. If you see evidence of a Smurf, as some suggested, you also now know why it is blue.

If you do not, then the blue is probably corrosion from the brass parts that are part of the toilet hardware. Iron corrodes into a redish color, brass into a blue or blue-green.

Why is it dripping anything? It could be condensation. That is quite common in the Summer time because of high humidity.

It also could be that a leak has started. This is most likely the washers/gaskets where the tank is bolted to the bowl. If the color is due to corrosion, it makes it even more likely that the gaskets around those bolts are leaking.

If so, do not attempt to tighten the bolts or nuts, replace them. They do corrode and get weaker. When that happens, they can break. Actually, they sometimes corrode so much that they are not holding anything. They will eventually leak.

They are relatively easy to replace. It is within most good DIY'ers range. It also takes minimal tools and parts.

Personally, I like the Smurf theory the best.

There are three sources for the leak. This assumes. of course you have a blue disinfectant tab in the tank.
There are 2 screws that hold the tank to the toilet base. Water, and therefore, the blue stuff would come out there. The other source is the large connection between the tank and toilet. It may leak there if not tightened enough by the 2 screws.

Someone in your house is putting that awful blue thingy that hangs on the inside of the water tank. It is supposed to keep the water (if you live in a hard water area)from caking around the tank into crystals and brown gunk, it also keeps the water blue.
What may be happening is that you have some water leaks around the water tank area.
You can fix it by turning the cold water supply to the tank a bit lower, or adjusting the volume of the water so it would not reach too high.
Well, the mechanics of a toilet flush system is pretty simple, but if you are not sure, it is best to just tell somebody else, who may know how to fiddle with it.

Sounds like the remnants of one of those blue discs/tabs that people drop into their tanks to keep the water in the bowl blue and supposely cleaner/fresher smelling. That, combined with a faulty seal near where the tank and toilet parts come together.

Have you taken the tank lid off your toilet and and looked in there for evidence of remnants of one of those blue discs? I've seen some toilet tanks where the disc must've exploded or something because the entire tank wall is covered in blue gunk. So, if this is the case, your tank might need a good cleaning.

Someone else would have to advise you about fixing the seal!

If the drip is a liquid and you put one of those blue sanitizer things in the tank, then that is it. You have a leak around the valve where the water enters the tank from the bottom. Sometimes a little twist of a wrench is enough to stop it. Or, break the tank, so go easy. If you don't put anything blue in the tank, then I'll go with the Smurf idea.

It sounds like the screws are some sort of copper alloy and they are old and corroding, which is creating the leak. The blue is the copper and its dripping on the floor. Replace the gaskets and screws and your problems will go away.

You obviously have smurfs sneaking in at night and taking leaks in your toilet.

Sounds terminal. Shoot the toilet.
