personally i think it isn't like that, i think its just a setting because its the perfect environment, i think there may be odd bits that are real but definitely not all of it.

It's been a while since I have this film... but I do know that a place in LA is like that.

A gang do control a whole suburb/street like that, normal people that live there are to scared to inform police and live in fear. And everyone else is so close-knit that the police can't get much information and infiltration is almost impossible.

Of course I might be thinking about the wrong film... :P

i'm from the uk and spent four mounths in LA in 2000 with my daughter (who was then 3) and i have to say i think the film although a great story was a little unrealistic, there are some parts of the city that are really rough but on the whole its a very curturally diverse city thats a whole lot of fun. if your thinking of going try santa monica- a little out of the main city but on the coast and beautiful.

I thought that the film was very good but there again, I think Denzel Washington is an excellent actor. As for L.A. being ALL like that. I doubt it. However, I do remember when I was out there many years ago that some a***hole was sniping at cars on the freeway from the L.A. hills. Too many guns man.

Well, being a movie, I'd kinda thought it was make believe. If we actually thought what we saw on the screen was real, do you think anyone would visit the US?

No different than Britain, there are always certain streets that you wouldn't walk through.
