Has a rabbit ever been handled by an ape, in a zoo or anything like that? Would the ape kill the rabbit and eat it, or would it pet it and cuddle it? I don't know why I need to know this, but I can't get the question out of my mind.

I don't think it would eat it. I don't know about rabbits specifically, but gorillas in zoos have definately befriended kittens in the past. Koko comes to mind. She is quite the celebrity in the US, apparently, she is famous as she has learned sign language and she has a cat. you can see her at this link:

Although it's not quite a rabbit, I hope it puts your mind to rest.

Gorillas are mostly vegetarians in the wild. Also a famous gorilla (Koko I think) who was taught sign language was given a pet cat which she was very fond of.

Chimpanzees are known to prey on small mammals in the wild and thus might kill a rabbit if they could catch it.

I don't know about the lesser apes - gibbons and siamangs - but of the great apes, gorillas and orangoutans probably wouldn't but chimpanzees, bonobos and humans certainly would. In fact I have some rabbits in my freezer right now.

Koko, the mountain gorilla who was taught to use sign language asked for as cat for a pet,, who she named "ball". She held and petted her and was like a parent to her. A rabbit would be the same I would think, don't know about in the wild though.

Are apes carnivores?
This I know, by sad circumstance, a raccoon would definitely maul and eat a rabbit.

Yes. They are omnivorous animals like us. Given a chance and situation, they do kill and eat rabbits.

A chimp is an ape.

I saw a documentary showing a band of chimps chasing down a monkey and eat it while it was still alive.

gruesome.

I doubt that chimps would be any "more gentle" with rabbits.
They hunt and eat meat.

apes are omnivores, and usually tend to eat easily digestable foods...a rabbit probably doesn't make the cut...but you should try it out, and tell me what happens...
